Offer of Competency
The Jelinek laboratory has been working on new strategies for water purification using composite materials comprising carbon dots (C-dots) encapsulated within porous frameworks, including hydrogels and polymer sponges. C-dots constitute a new class of nanoscale carbonaceous materials, exhibiting remarkable and useful physico-chemical properties. The material designs allow efficient water uptake, while the embedded C-dots constitute effective photothermal mediators, absorbing solar energy for enhanced water evaporation. Importantly, the extensive surface area of the C-dot/host matrixes facilitate adsorption and concomitant removal of water-dissolved pollutants, including heavy metal ions, organic contaminants, detergents, and others. The C-dot/porous gel constructs are easily synthesized from inexpensive, biocompatible and environmentally friendly building blocks, are recyclable, and may be employed in varied water purification applications.
